Frequently asked questions.
Q1: What is the difference between Hajj and Umrah?
A: Hajj is a mandatory pilgrimage performed once a year during the month of Dhul Hijjah and is one of the five pillars of Islam. Umrah is a non-mandatory pilgrimage that can be performed any time of the year. Hajj includes more rituals and is performed on specific dates, while Umrah is shorter and simpler.
Q2: Can I perform Hajj or Umrah on my own, or do I need to go with a licensed agency?
A: International pilgrims are required to go through a licensed travel agency approved by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. While Umrah can be arranged through the Nusuk platform, it is highly recommended to use a licensed group service for ease and guidance.
Q3: How do I apply for a visa for Umrah or Hajj?
A: Umrah visas can be applied for through the official Nusuk platform or an approved Umrah operator. Hajj visas are only issued through licensed Hajj agents. A valid passport, vaccination certificate, and confirmed bookings are usually required.
Q4: Can I perform Umrah with a tourist visa?
A: Yes, citizens of eligible countries can perform Umrah using a Saudi tourist eVisa. However, Hajj cannot be performed using a tourist visa.
Q5: What documents are required for the visa application?
A: Required documents generally include a passport with at least six months validity, passport-sized photographs, a valid vaccination certificate (especially for Meningitis and COVID-19), and confirmed travel and accommodation bookings.
Q6: What should I pack for Umrah or Hajj?
A: Essentials include Ihram clothing (for men), modest attire (for women), comfortable footwear, personal hygiene items, medications, travel documents, a power bank, and a small bag for daily use.
Q7: Do I need vaccinations before traveling?
A: Yes. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia requires proof of vaccination against Meningitis (ACWY). COVID-19 and seasonal flu vaccinations are also recommended. Always check for updated health requirements.
Q8: What are the main rituals of Umrah?
A: The primary rituals of Umrah are: entering the state of Ihram with intention, performing Tawaf (seven circuits around the Kaaba), performing Sa’i (walking seven times between Safa and Marwah), and shaving or trimming the hair.
Q9: Can women perform Umrah alone?
A: Women above a certain age (usually 18) may perform Umrah without a mahram if they are part of an organized group and follow current Saudi regulations. It is advised to check the latest rules on the Nusuk platform.
